I saw a bald eagle flying around SI after Hurricane Irene, but a "birder" friend told me it was probably temporarily displaced due to the storm and would leave. I wonder if this is the same one?
It really is cool to hear this. I see more wildlife on SI than in the woods upstate. Today is the first day in ages I haven't seen a deer. Yet at least...
Kefir: the Bald Eagle was on the endangered list - nearly gone - when I was a child (70s). Protections were put in place and it's been off for a while now.
There were swans in the Gowanus Canal a few weeks back. NYC is like living in wild Alaska now.
The swans on SI are huge! I have to keep my eye on two of them every time I bring my kids to a particular park. They are nasty, violent birds and constantly go after the kids.
