I live off 204th right now. It's Dominican, so it's louder (particularly the closer you get to Amsterdam and to a lesser extent Broadway), but it's safe. LOTS of great, cheap food. Very family friendly from what I've seen. It strikes me as WaHi-Lite. Not as loud, people generally utilize the trash cans, and I've yet to see any scuffles on the sidewalks. Personally, I think it's great if you're alright with the 40ish commute to Lower Manhattan.
Actually considering looking for property up here to buy instead of rent.
I've lived in the area for 20 years. There's no denying it's loud particularly in the summer. As has been stated many times, west of Broadway is quieter and nicer but more expensive. I am seeing on Trulia that apartments east of Broadway is now gentrifying quickly.
It's a SWPL paradise (prewar buildings, culture (Cloisters), parks, river views, library, trees and hills...what's up with my people and needing to be as high up as possible) which at the present time happens to be mainly inhabited by another tribe, a happy go lucky music loving people, who are beginning to figure out that the strange, farmers-marketing, stroller pushing paleskinned folk popping up everywhere regard them as inhabiting this place on false pretenses.
i live on dyckman and seaman, on weekends in summer it's full of crazy partying dominicans, like a lot and very crazy... always safe, but loud and trashy... i love it otherwise, great parks, cool neighbors.. terrible parking also... getting expensive fast
