While officials claim that the increase in ridership is due to “the city’s population growth, an improved economy and more reliable train service,” there is also concern that the subway system will become too broken and too overcrowded to handle the increase in passengers. MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast gave a few solutions in the report to combat delays:
Not only is the subway the easiest and often fastest way to get around it is also the cheapest. Taxi fare from the UES to Union Square during the day can hit major double digits. The free subway/bus MC transfers are icing on the cake. If you know how to work things you can get around and back home paying only two fares instead of four.
I have it pretty easy because I'm on the C train at 6:30 AM. None of the yahoos seem to be out that early. Afternoons are a little tougher (Penn Sta) but I still manage to find a spot on the train where only a few have to stand, if at all.

I don't know about it being so easy anymore. It's pretty brutal but it's still the best cheapest option available. I'm not complaining. That being said NyC could definitely do better.
