I was wondering if anyone has the link to search the NYC records database for old marriage records, birth certificates, etc. just trying to do a little family history searching. I thought NYC made them available for free online.

It would be massive project to put such records online. I've done some research and have seen in person the marriage, birth, death, and naturalization books and microfilms. The volume of media is enormous. In other words, it hasn't been done by the city, but...

Indexes for many records are here:

Italian Genealogical Group (IGG)

You could also try ancestry.com, they have a 2 week free trial, that seems enough time to decide if it's getting you anywhere.

Ellis Island has a free database for people entered the USA via NYC if that helps.

You can also make an appointment and go down to the Municipal Archives for all of these sorts of records.

I have spent many happy hours in the New York Public Library Genealogy Division when my dad was doing research for family genealogy books. It's hard for me to go back now that he's gone, but I can tell you that the staff is very helpful and you have access to a variety of data bases. There are also books and other sources to use. It's a great resource!
