In the apartment buildings I've lived in, either there's a trash chute, or else people bring their trash somewhere like the basement.
The building super bags it and sets it out by the curb.
But why would you care?

The building or apartment complex requirements, rules and guidelines of the building or apartment complex you move into are really the only ones you should have concern about.
You also should not be concerned about the above mentioned until you have signed a lease.
I do not mean to be offensive at all but to Cida and CSD610;
Your Post just sound like you may have had a Bad Day at Work;
and are un-realizingly taking it out on others.
I am so sorry if my post offended anyone; I Started this thread to TRY to be Educational to NEW; New Yorker's and Tourist!!! BUT; Let's Try to Keep this Thread Going and Answer as many Questions as Possible about the Big Apple that ANYbody may have Lets try to stay Positive Here!!!
Lastly to Cida and CSD610; if you did have a bad day at work I apologize for anybody's rude-ness or Dis-respect; you had to deal with.
If you want a visual on what trash and mailboxes look like in NYC, just go to Google images and type something like "apartment building mailboxes nyc" or "trash pick-up nyc"
Or even just go to Google street view and look around the neighborhoods. I'm sure there are some trash bags on the sidewalks awaiting pickup when the Google map truck comes by.
There are things called trash chutes, lobbies with mailrooms, laundry pickup/dropoff services, laundry rooms in basement, superintendents, porters, doormen, etc... Its called the easy life, no need to drive anywhere, or even walk outside for that matter.
In older large apt. buildings tenants throw bags of trash down a garbage chute. Recyclables are left in a closet style room on each floor where the building porter (or the other building employees) collect it. The building porter collects the garbage from a room where the trash chute goes in the basement as well as sorts of all the collected recyclable material. This is put (by the bldg. porter) outside the building in bags on the appropriate garbage/recyclables collection days.
I have another question...
Does anybody ever Clean and Sweep
the Common Area's or Lobbies of
Apt./Buildings. Such as a Building super??? (super-intendant???)

This isn't even specific to NY, it's just apartment living in general. Has the OP never been to an apartment building?

Stop with the colors and bold and stop calling it "the big apple".
