When your hungry your capable of doing anything to eat. It's basic survival. I'm sure some of the stuff thrown out is only a day or two expired and still relatively edible. I wouldn't do it in my current situation but I can't knock it too much.
If you are starving, you will even eat the RATS that are chewing on the dumpster food.
Like the guy says in Pulp Fiction; "sewer rats might taste like pumpkin pie but I still wouldn't eat the filthy .."
