After the tragic Amtrak derailment, this might be a good time to lobby for more funding for public transportation in general.

I get local and state funding for infrastructure like the MTA - better transportation improves area, increases property values eg property taxes, brings jobs to area, etc.

But more federal funding? Why should a guy from Florida or Texas pay taxes to subsidize my ride on the 6 train in the morning?

Both NYS and NYC have huge budget surplus atm. NYS alone got *billions* from various banking settlements and yet where is that money going?

NYS and NYC are always crying poor mouth wanting the federal government in part or whole to pick up the tab for major infrastructure projects. However with a golden opportunity presented by windfall tax receipts and settlements as per normal both the state and City have better things to do.

If de Boob would stop handing out tens of millions in civil settlements that money could be used for infrastructure projects. The state of NYC roads, streets and highways is a disgrace not to mention dangerous. Potholes like craters, rough surfaces and lane markings all but erased.

Also, keep an eye on Chicago and Chicago Public school system to see the future of the MTA. Reduce expenses (no improvements) and raise revenues (higher fares, etc) simply to pay for ballooning public sector pensions.

The same reason people from NY (and other urban centers) subsidize rural roads, airports, landlines, etc., etc., across the country.

NYC are needs hundred of billions of dollars to update its transportation infrastructure to meet the demands of the 21st century. Airports, Railway, Commuter rail, roads, bus stations and even our ports need massive upgrades and facelifts.

Our airports are in horrible condition which can cause accidents do to length of runaways, also airports cause traffic delays that can delay air traffic nationwide. Along with no rail link to LaGuardia airport is absurd even though governor Cuomo announced an extention with Airtrain from Willits Point, I feel that its way to late for this and it should have been done years ago. LaGuardia Airport needs its runways extended to handle larger aircraft and should be converted into an international airport instead of only being regional. JFK airport is disgusting and a confusing mess along with horrible airport terminals. Also since its located near the water, a storm like Hurricane Sandy can knock out both airports in no time. Horrible part about JFK is that its so far away from Manhattan, and getting their by car is a mess and by rail a journey.

Bus Terminals need to be updated for the 21st century so that these stations can handle a higher load of people traffic, bus and vehicular traffic and merchants. I feel that the current Port Authority Bus Terminal should be torn down and a new one should be built Instead of building condos and other buildings over Hudson Yards, Hudson Yards would have been a great location for a new and modern Bus Terminal. I know that the Port Authority Bus Station in Washington Heights is going to be upgraded which looks promising. Not only that but a Bus Terminal that sits near Commuter Rail station like Penn Station can allow seamless transition from bus to train for regional commuters.

The Northeast Rail Corridor is a joke. So many different entities run on these lines like heading north is shared between MTA and Amtrak, in NJ lines are shared by NJ Transit and Amtrak, when the trains pass through NYC, lines are shared between NJ Transit, LIRR and Amtrak. This in total just creates to much congestion and delays that can affect the whole entire Northeast Corridor. My suggestion is Amtrak to abandoned commuter rail lines and leave it for government entities and industrial companies. The Northeast Corridor needs high speed rail that stretches from Boston to DC. Also Penn Station needs to be rebuilt so that it can handle a load of passengers that pass in and out of the station instead of a narrow corridor.

NYC subway system is not designed to handle 8 million people. The biggest mistake the city has done is dismantle some subway lines that stretched from North to South, but then again the cities population dropped due to the White Flight. Two generations later no one expected a resurgence in urban living, not only in NYC, but other Northeast cities as well such as Boston, DC and even Philly. No one did not expect the decline of suburbs, and increased number of suburbanites moving into cities for work via public transit. Most of these suburbanites live in inner city neighborhoods that ring around Manhattan, often these trains are bogged down due to so much passengers when it enters inner city neighborhoods. The system is overburden, delays upon delays, constant track work, extreme heat, and extreme cold hampers the system and destroys equipment causing delays, lets not forget Hurricane Sandy.

Last our Ports need to be expanded to meet the demands of future trade. Ships are getting bigger and bigger and if these ships can not sail under our bridges due to height issues, its not the ships fault, its NYC fault. Bridges need to torn down so that ships can pass under them safely. NYC can never again be the busiest port in the country or in the world, that title will always be in LA.

My suggestions for improving NYC transport infrastructure?

LGA needs to be expanded and converted to an international airport which can alleviate air traffic from JFK. Along with longer runways to allow for larger planes.

Amtrak needs to embrace high speed rail that connects, Boston, Providence, Stan Ford, NYC, Trenton, Philadelphia, Baltimore and DC is a must, with express stops only for the 4 major cities.

MTA needs to build additional subway lines, maybe a minimum of 3 lines that can ease congestion in the city.

Tear down the current bus terminal and tear down Javits Center and build a new bus terminal where the Javits Center.

Expanded ferry service along the East River to help alleviate subway congestion.

Last. Change Federal and State tax laws so that the rich can pay for transportation infrastructure challenges.

If I have to pay a surcharge on every phone bill to get internet and phone service out to the boonies, those people should pay a surcharge to fund our mass transportation costs.

If you live in NYS you already *DO* pay surcharges on your gas/electric bill and certain property sales to the MTA.
