Is it by choice or with cost considerations that the new stations appear almost exactly like the old stations from almost 100 years ago? Of course they have to keep the tracks and signal systems the same but somehow I imagined these new stations would look a bit more modern like newer subway stations in cities around the world.
Initially, the Q will operate on the 2nd Ave line, extended from 57th St/7th Ave (it will no longer serve Astoria during weekdays, I don't know if another line will be created to help the N during the week (maybe they'll bring back the W, running weekdays only from Ditmars Blvd to Whitehall St). So to answer your question, it will be a "B Division" route, with the longer and wider cars.
Going forward, the 2nd Ave line will be extended south of 63rd St to Lower Manhattan. There will be a "T" train to run on this segment (the Q would continue to run on 2nd Av north of 63rd St). There is a possibilty of it being extended to Brooklyn, but I suspect that won't happen in my lifetime
I believe Phase 2 is supposed to extend the Q from 57th/7th Ave to 63rd then up 2nd Ave all the way up to 125th Street. The Q from 125 is supposed to be like super express. Would cut my commute on the 6 to 59th then to N/Q/R to 57th St by at least 15 min I would think. Hurry up MTA!
Damn seriously? Why would MTA have T and Q train going up 2nd Ave with both going local service? Seems like a waste to me. Q should be express from 125 to 63rd St.. Hope that plan changes.
This was initially supposed to be completed by 2012, then it got bumped up to 2014 now its 2016-17. Once it finally gets completed in 2019 it will only stay nice for a few weeks before the bums make it their new home and leaks will be discovered throughout the tunnels. On top of that they will raise their rates once again to pay for this. The only relief will be the end of the drilling.

4 tracks cost more than two tracks. It is very simple. Also the 2nd Avenue subway isn't the only subway with just local service. The L is just local. The Culver line in Brooklyn carries both the F and G, yet they do not use the express tracks. N and Q run on Astoria line, both local.
I think the Second Avenue Subway should go to the Bronx. The 2 and the 5 trains in the Bronx are overcrowded. As the Second Avenue Subway is extended to 125th Street it will have provisions for a later expansion to the Bronx.

There's 2 lines, so one could go west along 125th and the other north into the Bronx.
