I rented an apartment for the summer in NYC. I am now having trouble getting my securiyt deposit back. The utilities were to be taken out of it and the rest returned. Is there an agency I can at the very least file a complaint with or who can hekp? Any ideas?

I had a little trouble getting my money back too. I started with a simple letter to the landlord explaining what was owed and that I believed it was past due (the law is weird on this point - the landlord has something like a 'reasonable' amount of time to return it, not a specific amount of time). anyway, in my case it was at least a few months, so I figured I would start with a letter and then move on to small claims. An intermediate step before small claims could be a letter on lawyer's letterhead (if you have a friend who is a lawyer). Some would say to always send registered mail so you have proof the landlord got the letter, but I did not do that. And the first letter worked in my case.
