Does anyone know of any reputable acting schools in NYC? Where would a person live while attending one of these schools?

in the sunday ny times arts section there are always a couple of ads for acting schools, you should check them out, as for a place to live, you're on your own, maybe the schools have informal networks for housing

The New School has an active theater program. But it's a degree program and, like everything in NYC, not cheap.

A lot depends on what kind of acting you're planning to do. For stage, there's HB Studios. For film/TV, try Weist-Barron (http://www.weistbarron.com/home.htm - broken link). Both allow you to take individual classes, rather than a full-time program.
If you're looking for a degree program, I imagine every college in the city has one.
As to where you'd live? Well, where ever you want, I guess ..... ???

What about the Lee Strasberg school. The list of actors that attended the school is quite impressive.

There's also The Neighborhood Playhouse on East 54th, between 1st & 2nd. It has a very long history and is a great theatre school. The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre (broken link)
You can also check out the message boards at Backstage.com The Actor's Resource: Casting Calls, Movie Auditions and Actor's Union News There are many people there that are very helpful and you can find out a lot there about acting schools, classes, etc.
Good luck!!!

Michael Howard Studios
I studied acting at Michael Howard Studios when I first moved to the city. It was such a good experience. I did the conservatory and I actually got my agent out of the showcase at the end.
There are other good programs out there too, but that one was the best for me.
