Arrogant human. We are already killing the planet. NYC has enough building period. Insanity.

People living in urban environments consume far less resources than those in suburbs or rural areas. If you cared about the earth you would support more skyscrapers and less suburbs.

Thank you. You saved me the trouble of writing pretty much exactly the same thing.

It blows my mind how people think that cities are bad for the planet. Cities are what is going to save this planet.

If you breed you have no right lecturing ANYONE about planet and the environment. I personally don't give a crap about the planet, but tired of the hypocrisy about people having hissy fits over supermarket plastic bags when they've shat out kids. Until your carbon footprint is free of Gerber, ****.

Historically, and this goes back well before the first skyscraper, showcase buildings are constructed out of a sense of insecurity. It can be an individual's insecurity, a government's insecurity, or most commonly of all, some combination of both. A supertall is a way of saying: "Look at me! Look over here! I am the biggest and best!"

Even within this thread, on some level, everyone seems to understand that. You've got people who think New York should go on a Dubai-esque building binge -- those people are insecure about New York's status in the world. And then you've got people who think that's silly -- those people don't think New York has anything to prove. Simple as that.

If you ask me, New York can't and shouldn't get sucked into playing this game of competing with insecure boomtowns like Dubai. I do think New York -- and other U.S. cities -- need to keep up to some extent, but New York and Dubai are trying to accomplish different things in terms of image, so why play by the newbie's rules? More than a century ago, New York started building because it was in Dubai's position. Now it's an established world city, so it doesn't have to expend resources building up, just like London and Paris didn't way back then.

Cities use higher levels of pollution such as smog. Good examples are LA Delhi and Beijing.

Thats mainly due to cars all of that could be mitigated with more use of mass transit. Also dosen't changee the fact that apartment dwellers use less energy than people in the suburbs. Cities are the most efficient way for people to live.
