It's probably not the cost of the unit itself but the cost of operating it/the electricity bill that the OP is trying to cut back on.

Depending on the summer, no AC is totally doable.

Exactly,
AC's are cheap...it is the running of them that is pricey.

My bill is not that expensive. This guy is living in a studio apt. The AC should cool the place with just 20 to 45 mins of Cool AC function then afterwards he can switch to fan mode. That is what i do. I don't leave the AC on 24/7. I turn it on once i get home put it on AC mode for 30 mins to cool the place and then switch to fan mode. Once i get ready for bed, i put it on AC mode for 30 mins then switch back to fan mode. When i wake up, i put it on AC mode until i leave for work. A lot of AC come with a program timer.

If this guy were to take a girl home and he doesn't have an AC it might be a mood killer especially if it's gross outside. Hot and humid, etc.

It's possible, but not entirely pleasant. In my previous place I had a huge window fan (the type that wouldn't fit in a lot of NYC windows) and a smaller tower fan. There were a few nights in 2013 when I had to resort to putting my pillow in the freezer and such shenanigans to get myself to fall asleep. Last year was fine. Now I have AC but that's also not all great - it makes unpleasant noises and I usually wake up with a runny nose after sleeping with the AC on, aside from the cost.

I didn't have on last year and was okay. Would like to have had one for a few days, but last summer wasn't bad. I hate the noise and forced air, but there will be several days I am sure that I will run one this summer.

More specifically, I want to to try cooling my small studio apartment with a strong window fan at night. During the day when I'm at work if its sunny I'll close all the windows and curtains to try to minimize how much the apartment gets heated up by the sun. At night, I'll turn on the window fan to blow air out. The hot air inside gets pushed out and replaced by the cool night air outside.

Has anyone tried something like this in a small NYC apartment and been successful or ultimately failed and had to put the AC back in?

Thanks!
That would only work if your from a really hot country or the south and have a tolerance for humid summers. If you don't your best best is to plunk the money down on the most energy efficient AC you can buy and a good fan. Our summers are too humid so cool air doesn't circulate from outside on most days.

I can't do it with the heat over here in the summer. It's not even the heat, it's the humidity that kills. AC goes on when I get home from work and it's on Energy Saver until I leave for work in the morning.

I haven't had a/c for years. I had it taken out, and, yes, there are usually two or three uncomfortable weeks mid-summer, but no big deal.

Have you considered a ceiling fan?

It will really depend on your apartment. If there is no cross ventilation the fan drawing the air out will be replacing it with the air it has just drawn. It is possible if you have a big enough window that you can place the fans in such away that you are drawing in fresh air to replace the warm stale air you have just drawn out but if it's a single window apartment you need some other place from where the fresh cool air is coming from. It may work that you can open the door for about twenty minutes to draw the hot air out and replace it with cooler air.
