Spellegrino,

There's tons of places in NJ that are nice and quiet. However, you will need a car for shopping. NJ is nice and quiet to raise a kid in a healthy safe environment. You can get that living in Queens, but you'll have to be further out like Bayside in order to keep the kid away from danger, bad kids, and learning about things they shouldn't.

Try West New York, NJ. That's a 15 min commute into Time Square and you get a wonderful view of Manhattan depending on where you live. Also, that's sorta a Latin neighborhood and you might enjoy having your kids surrounded by culture you're familiar with.

FYI - the Latin community is a tad different than what you're use to in Brazil, but at least your kids will be fluent in the language.

My advice is to spend as little on rent as possible. There are places in West NY, brand new luxury condos where I think you can get a 2 bedroom for around 2K. You can also get a 2 bedroom for around 1,600.00, but it won't be in a doorman building with a gym.

I would also add Rego Park in Queens to the list places to check out.

You can find that in Long Island, as long as your stick to Nassau county the commute will be less than an hour and you can walk from Penn station to Times Square.

I agree check the NJ forum as that may be your best bet.
park slope is more expensive than many parts of manhattan, believe it or not. ditto for williamsburg.

smart thing to do is rent new construction condo in nyc itself, with a gym, pool, billiards room/lounge, library, and a kids room. that's the way you deserve to live at your salary. do you really wanna live like someone on a bus driver salary? also that latin culture thing is cute but it is better to be around people of all kinds and a lot of energy around you if you can afford it. it opens your mind and offers you more opportunities in life.
