Hi all, I have to move within Brooklyn b/c the house where I'm living is being sold. I make about 45k now (hoping to get a better paying job soon) and also cover some monthly student loans, so I'm searching for another shared situation similar to my current one, where I can hopefully pay $900/month or less in rent. (For a room in a two or three bedroom apt).

I am primarily looking at Crown Heights, Bed Stuy, Prospect/Lefferts Garden, Bushwick. (Would love Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, Greenpoint or Williamsburg, but I'm assuming they'll be too expensive, and I've considered Sunset Park or Flatbush, though I may feel like I'm in exile so far from everything.) I've lived before in Washington, DC and Oakland, CA, and am comfortable with a neighborhood that's a bit on the rough side. I'm happy being near any train, pretty much.

Problem is, I really love hanging out and working in coffeehouses. I know cheaper rent doesn't tend to correlate with coffeehouses, and I recently looked at a nice place on Albany Ave & Sterling that I could afford, but I don't believe there are any nearby. I also had a hard time judging just how rough it was there. The people seemed really nice, but it's a block from the Albany Houses project, so not sure how it'd be at night.

Anybody have suggestions for a neighborhood that's cheapish, not too super dangerous, and might have a decent place to drink coffee on the weekends?

Many thanks!

My neighborhood consumes the most coffee of any neighborhood in NYC, but it doesn't fit your criteria of being both ghetto and overpriced. Its also not technically in Brooklyn, but it is closer to the Brooklyn that you want to be by than most of Brooklyn (that you could actually afford) is.

Why don't you just get a room in Astoria? The areas you're looking at suck.

Somewhere near Brighton Beach or off Coney Island. There are cafes there that serve good old Turkish / Central Asian coffee.

Yes, you can find a room in Western Crown Heights for your budget, even under budget; looking at Craiglist, rooms in apartments in Prospect Heights proper (but Western Crown Heights is fine as well and has what you're looking for/plus is a stone's throw away from shops in Prospect Heights) seem to be in the $1,000 range at their cheapest. Now, don't expect it to be the nicest place, but it is definitely possible. Look around.

Look at sidestreets off Nostrand Ave for a share, where Nostrand intersects with Dean St. more or less.

I doubt your post; it's just too classic.

There is a Starbucks in Brighton Beach.

But...obviously (since it's in Brighton Beach), it has a mostly Russian clientele.
Not the most relaxing atmosphere, as a result...
