I'm searching for some decently priced goat meat in NYC. The Muslim merchants on Atlantic and 4th sell for around $6-$7 per pound and the Chinese market we shop at sells for around $4.99 a pound (better prices, but their goat still has the skin on it, which not everyone likes), but I'm looking for considerably cheaper options. Compare Market near me had a sale a couple of months back where goat meat was $2.99 a pound, but I haven't seen those prices since then. I'm curious to know if any other goat eaters know of better deals in NYC.

I wonder whether Shambles, the "artisan" butcher on FDB, has some.

They might arrange it if you asked and might negotiate on price. They have a farm or something ...?

I found them an odd bunch - we don't shop there - but people seem to love them.

Check out the outer boroughs board on chowhound. I'm sure it's on there somewhere, it may be just "chow" these days tho...

I remember some years ago that Pioneer Supermarket on 63rd Road in Rego Park used to sell goat meat. I don't know if they still do.

Western Beef on Empire Blvd in Brooklyn sometimes has good price deals, but I don't know how goat-y they are this week. They have custom-cut butcher department. Sometimes the quality isn't all it should be in terms of stringiness etc, when I buy cheap stewing beef. But, prices are generally good on all meats. Probably best to try them out before investing in a big purchase.

Their meat dept. in the store on Empire Blvd has a bad smell reported in Yelp reviews. I haven't been inside it.

The newer store on E.NY Ave near Ralph, where I shop often, has no such problem. Goat is always there because so many customers are Caribbean.

Does this mean goat is about to go the way of oxtails?

Not telling you where I buy mine.

Maybe not worth the traval times but your best bet would probably be meat markets in ethnic enclaves in Queens such as in Astoria, Elmhurst or Jamaica.

Ethnic places for sure...West Indian neighborhoods will probably have goat meat (curry goat, for example).

USDA inspected goat slaughterhouses in the NYC area are American Halal Meat, Newark, NJ and ENA Meat Packing, Patterson, NJ. You might be able to buy a whole goat carcass wholesale. Give tham a call.
