Hi all, I know most people like to live in Manhattan (I would love too!!!) You're always hearing about living in NYC, but I was thinking, what about those that want to live close but not quite in manhattan. Where are some areas that are attractive, clean, and safe? preferably a more upscale area. Something that is within 25 miles of Manhattan with good public transporation. What area are most like that? Probably something in New Jersey but all I think of when I hear New Jersey is decay, power plants, and industrialization. (No offense to all you folks in N.J.) Thanks,

daniel_T

What is your criteria? Budget is important so knowing that would help. Within 25 miles of NY in an attractive, safe neighborhood with good transit options prices for homes will start around $750k for something fairly basic.

Not really a suburb, but places like Brooklyn Heights and Boerum Hill are beautiful, upscale and more suburban than Manhattan.

If you want really upscale suburban, try Scarsdale, New York which has the highest median income in the United States and is beautiful.

In Connecticut, try Greenwich, New Canaan and Wesport.

In New Jersey you have Alpine, and Saddle River.

There are many more, but I haven't really explored because I'm new to NYC.

Cool. As long as it's a fairly close drive to Manhattan. No longer than 30 minutes driving time.

It's likely to be more than 30 minutes in rush hours....

Bronxville, Scarsdale, Tuckahoe, Larchmont, Rye, Tarrytown, etc. These are all pretty nice towns. Basically any of the smaller towns in Lower Westchester are pretty nice, to varying degrees.

You can get into the city in a little over 30 minutes by train, but driving into the city in 30 minutes is going to be difficult from most places.

Brooklyn Heights is really nice. It's my favorite neighborhood in NY. Westchester is really nice as well. The drive will never be 30 minutes if you're driving during rush hour to and from work. Have you looked into Long Island? There are some great neighborhoods like Rockville Center, Manhasset, Port Washington that are close to Manhattan.

Good luck.
