Any unsafe neighborhoods surrounding Central Park? (New York, Amsterdam: real estate, 2015, apartments)

Are there any unsafe living areas surrounding Central Park? Basically, if while apartment-hunting online I stick to those within a block of two of Central Park is it likely to be safe? I am very unfamiliar with the different areas of Manhattan, and I've read in this forum that situations can often change rapidly form block to block. I'm looking for a place where my white, middle class family will feel comfortable moving to from the suburbs.
How much money does your white middle class family have? You do realize that most of the areas around Central Park are prime real estate and are very expensive.
I hope I didn't sound like I'm against diversity or anything with the "white, middle class" statement. It's just that from what I've read here, different neighborhoods tend to be made up of different populations, and while I would love to get to know all kinds of people (except maybe drug dealers and thugs) I also don't want my family to be the only white one around. I'm just starting to learn about NYC real estate and there is a LOT to wrap my head around. There are so any neighborhoods; it's difficult to learn about them all. I wouldn't want to pay more than $8500 but I don't need anything fancy, just safe, and I like Central Park.
Unless your willing to spend 7-8 figures to buy an apartment (and not low 7-figures), the only place you'll be able to afford is north of the park (aka Harlem.) And event that's getting expensive.
Avoid Harlemm which has a lot of crime issues, and the other neighborhoods near Central Park are among the most expensive in the entire nation. You'll likely be better off looking into outer borough neighborhoods like Astoria.

Sadly, if your family is actually "middle class" you won't be living anywhere near Central Park.
Since you don't know this family's income that is sort of harsh statement to make.
There are plenty of households living between CPW and say Amsterdam who consider themselves "middle class", though their income would be seen as wealthy anyplace outside of the NYC area.
On the East Side things would be slightly different. From Fifth to say Madison is mostly firmly "wealthy" with some exceptions. Interestingly over the years many of the townhouses/brownstones and even some apartments were occupied by "middle class" households. However over the past decade or so many have sold up (at substantial profit) to high income persons.
I wouldn't want to pay more than $8500 but I don't need anything fancy, just safe, and I like Central Park.
OP said he can spend up to $8500. I assume that's per month. That will get you a pretty nice address, unless you're requiring several bedrooms. I honestly don't know what $8500 will get you, but I think it's reasonable to say that if someone can afford $8500/mo on rent, that they are doing well financially.
