i am saying that just to live on nyc real estate, you will give up a lot and a large % of that is definietly qol. not just hoodrats or gangsters with sagging pants but filth inside the home like rats and roaches and all types of bugs crawling at you at night, and noise. it is hard to live like that day in and day out, just to be near some real estate/location.
Marlboro aint that bad....I've been there a few times before, night and day. It's tame from a Brooklyn NYCHA standpoint.

I highly doubt you'll be able to find a decent living alone arrangement in prime areas of Manhattan for $1,500 which is what you'd need (IMO) to live on 80K. The best I found was $1,395 for a small but nice studio on the UES, back in 2001..

My friends who live decently in Manhattan all pay $2k+ to live with roommates, or $4k+ to live alone.

two blocks away from brighton beach, there are condos listed at 1250 a month for rent here in brooklyn. building is brand new from scratch (not renovated old 1950s garbage) in 2015, just a few months ago. he has to move to boroughs to live normal and clean and safe if he wants to "put away 7k in 401k and socialize." you can't have it all at that salary. it's really not that high for nyc.
The person said he wanted to live near MIDTOWN Manhattan.

Not Brooklyn and certainly not Coney Island.

Can he afford to live in Manhattan? Depending on the building and neighborhood yes.

LES is certainly within his budget and as another poster said it is rapidly gentrifying. And there are plenty of NEW and RENOVATED buildings in the area.

All sarcasm aside from these annoying threads that get started 20 times each day, 80K is more than enough to live on in midtown. You will even have enough disposable income to make choices. The 80K salary qualifies you for $2000/month rent which you can find i midtown but will be a small studio in an old walk up building. Still, you have to work to find it. You'll have plenty left over to eat out, buy your metrocard, and you can choose if you want to save the rest or blow it on alcohol and partying

Default Don't forget the Bronx

I love it up there. Sure, there are some high crime areas, but the rents are way more affordable than Manhattan. You can get a studio in a reasonable area that is not so bad a commute for 800 or so. Look around the Grand Concourse around Yankee Stadium. I lived there for several years and never had a problem.

80K isn't a low income though, low income would be more like $30-35K

80K in NYC would be 20k in any other city other than SF, LA or Chicago, if you have no debt and no kids or wife you should be able to get by but not you won't be comfortable, being comfortable in NYC would take 200k a year IMO or close to 300k if you want to buy a condo in Manhattan or a nice part of Brooklyn like Park Slope.

That's simply not true. One can certainly live comfortably with 80k in most of NYC.
