I currently have Fidelis health insurance and was looking for a new PCP, since my PCP is way downtown and I live closer uptown around 103rd and lex. I saw that Mount Sinai offers a clinic where you can go to do your annual exam and see a PCP. I would just have to switch my PCP to one of the doctors there this will save me so much time in travelling. I have some questions..

Any one have any experience with using a PCP through a hospital?

Mount Sinai IMA
17 East 102 Street
7th Floor
New York, NY 10029
https://www.mountsinai.org/care/primary-care/upper-east-side/ima
https://www.mountsinai.org/care/primary-care/upper-east-side/ima/about
https://www.mountsinai.org/care/primary-care

How will insurance work? if for example you go there and they give you a different doctor than your PCP, will you get charged by your insurance for not seeing your pcp?

"How the clinic runs At your first visit, a doctor will be assigned to you as your primary care doctor. All doctors are supervised by a group of senior doctors. *** The name of the doctor on your insurance card will be of one of the senior doctors, and may be different than who is your primary care doctor in the clinic."

Any one have a good PCP they can recommend up by E 96 - E 110

Thanks!

I am thinking about the same thing, Mr. nyc. My Doctor, in Greenwich Village is getting on my nerves...and he's too far.

You must first ascertain your PCP and then make sure any referrals are IN your network and then pay the co-pay for a specialist if you see anyone besides your PCP.

I am finding a lot of "churning" where one doctor shuttles you to another and then another seemingly just to run up insurance charges. I find this practice AWFUL but it seems common.

Sorry, I do not know anything about the Mount Sinai Doctors. I once walked in and spoke to a receptionist and she gave me a sheaf of PCP's names and circled one saying "This guy is really great>" Don't remember his name though.
If you find somebody you like, let me know.

Why not check out the last annual "Best Doctors in NY" issue in either USNews or NYMagazine. Perhaps the lists are online, and then correlate them against your insurance network.

My insurance told me to not bother with them. The PCPs as the hospital are typically lower quality. Personally I prefer Weil Cornell to Mt. Sinai but Weil has nothing in Queens they are only in the City.

Always start with the Physicians listed on your insurance provider network login online or the ones they text to you via phone etc. Then weed them out using Yelp, ZocDoc and Healthgrades.

That being said there are very few PCPs that are good, reliable and available.

^^^ THank You, Turks. She is less than a half mile walk for me. If she takes my insurance, I will give her a try.

this is a relatively new location. I've been here for my eyes consultation. It's pretty quiet, I have no complaints really. Easily accessible by Q or Lex Avenue trains also.

This is 2 years after the fact but my experience may help others (I'd be curious what your experience has been since your OP in 2018).

My wife and I used Mt. Sinai IMA for many years. I haven't been in over a year, my wife was last there Feb before the China virus hit.

MY PAST EXPERIENCE: The PCP listed on your card is rarely who you see, thats for billing and organizational purposes. 99% of your visits will be in the clinic situation on 102nd st. (some specialists might see you on 98th, or other offices in the main building for cardio or some medical issues).

You will be very lucky to get an attending physician, instead for Primary Care and for specialties you will be seen by residents who after examining and interviewing you, will run back to the central office on each floor, and then run it by the attending.

Many of the residents are very good, and sometimes the attending will enter the exam room to confirm whats going on/ talk with you (you can politely insist, that can work both ways...)

The problem is that the specialty and many if not all of the PC residents rotate out every 6-9 months, so if you wind up being a long term patient, then you don't get to keep your doctor if you like your doctor...if you're lucky you can get a long term attending as your PC but they are really overworked supervising all the residents as well as having patients.

Everyone is very overworked, the clinic covers most of the medicaid poor of East Harlem and some of the UES and Central Harlem.

REMEMBER, this is MY PAST EXPERIENCE.

When the virus hit this past Spring, my wife and I reached out to our individual PCPs and some of our specialty attendings for advice (we have some preexisting conditions) and never heard back. My wife did get a call back from a covering doctor but IIRC it was a phone tag issue, no real advice. My PCP never replied and only one specialist out of 3 replied.

I understand that Mt Sinai was overwhelmed during the the first few months of the China virus. When I was using another Doctor outside of the Mt. Sinai system a few months ago and he told me to go to an ER for a rushed lab test, he suggested I do not go to Mt. Sinai.

Good luck. Stay safe and healthy.

It's impossible to find a good PCP in NYC

PCPs in hospitals are terrible and have no knowledge even about simple things. They serve no purpose except to pump unnecessary drugs into low income ignorant patients that don't know any better.

Good quality medical care is only for the affluent. Thank goodness I don't need a referral under my insurance. Because I've literally only had one good PCP and he's also all the way in Tribeca. My insurance kept changing and he's too in demand. All the good ones are always heavily booked.

Even the bad ones are heavily booked. Often takes 2-3 months to get an application.
