Day Trip: Best Oceanfront/Waterfront town to visit in Long Island

Hello!

I have been in the NYC area for many years but have never visited the oceanfront areas of New York/Long Island.

I understand there are cities/towns in Long Island that are on the Atlantic Ocean front, some even with great views of New York.

My wife and I would like to take day trips this weekend - Saturday and Sunday, possibly even Monday to explore these areas.

What cities/towns do you suggest we visit?

Any other tips and suggestions on where to go, what to see, what to do would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much and best wishes for a great weekend to all.

I like the Long Beach peninsula, which includesLong Beach, Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach, and Point Lookout. Especially Long Beach: very pleasant, has much good shopping, a very long boardwalk, et al. But it is worth see all the other parts of that peninsula as well (Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach, and Point Lookout). And it is just east of Queens County's Rockaway Peninsula.

Port Jefferson is a nice beach town to visit but it is on the northern side of Long Island (so there are no views of Manhattan).

Thanks to all for sharing your tips and ideas.

Please pardon this rookie question: Are Southhampton and the other "Hamptons" considered oceanfront towns?

Oh yes,

The Hamptons are the pre-eminent, aka $$$$$, oceanfront towns.

It's where rich NY Jews Summered when they weren't welcomed in waspy Newport.

They weren't exactly welcomed there either. The Hamptons was all wasps not that long ago and there was plenty of antisemitism. The Maidstone Club once had a sign that said "No Jews, No Entertainers". Back then, you were nobody in East Hampton if you were not a member. In retaliation, a rich philanthropist named Evan Frankel purposely placed a synagogue right at the entrance to the town of East Hampton. Being relatively close to NYC, the wasps were bound to eventually lose their enclave. Jews did not become the norm there until the 70s and 80s. Before that they were relegated to Sag Harbor and areas west of the Shinecock Canal.

BTW, the Maidstone Club only recently allowed a few jews to join and that was only because of pressure from the PGA.

So why would those few jews bother to join the club that did not welcome them?
