Let's not all get crazy over recent shootings. Yes they're bad, but the numbers tell a different story: Gun violence is no worse than it was this time last summer--something that the headlines in crazy British tabloids conveniently don't tell you.:

"Despite a wild burst of gunfire that wounded nine people at a party in Brooklyn early Sunday morning, the number of shootings across New York City was sharply lower last week compared with the same week in 2014, bringing the city effectively even with last year in total amount of gunfire.

Through Sunday, there have been 669 shooting incidents citywide in 2015 versus 674 at this time last year, according to Police Department statistics. Those shootings resulted in 794 people struck by bullets — including nine hit, none fatally, in the Sunday shooting in East New York — virtually the same number at this point last year, when 787 had been struck.

The numbers are a sharp contrast to two months ago, when police commanders noted a rise in shootings and began to flood the most violent precincts with extra officers."

And? Shootings are still up at this point this year vs. this point last year (year to date totals). Source: http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/downloa...en-us-city.pdf

That's not good. And if incidents like this continue to happen this summer, then the numbers are really going to spike.

Thugs don't have to worry about being frisked for guns anymore, so its easy to be carrying these days. Thanks Deblasio.

Yes. Thanks Deblasio for effectively keeping the shootings and murder rate at it's lowest level in recorded history despite the continued increase in population. . Again, don't know what DeBlasio has to do with any of this (not a supporter of his at all) but since we are incorrectly assigning blame to people, let's at least be factual when we're doing so.

Your numbers are a week earlier than the ones posted in the NYT article, which are through Sunday, Aug 2. But I don't want to quibble. The point is that gun violence is essentially unchanged from a year ago, and no amount of whining about stop and frisk or quality of life stops will change that FACT.

As to what happens the rest of the summer, we'll see. But the city IMO has a good handle on things flooding the high-crime zones during the hot months, and shooting incidents are still even with last year even AFTER stop and frisk has been reduced. (And it has NOT been eliminated, just cut down.)

If the city by the end of the year has 10% more murders then last year, then that means we'll have around 360-370 murders this year as oppose to 330-340 last year. Oh no the city is burning down.
