23 yr old Irish man thinking of renting in Woodhaven Queens (86st @ Park Lane South). Is it a safe neifghborhood? Is it safe walking home from Jamaica Ave subway at 1am? Any and all information appreciated.
I used to live in that area near Woodhaven Blvd and Jamaica ave and wouldn't recommend it to a 23 year old Irish guy. It may look like a quiet neighborhood with Victorian homes but there are a lot of punk teenage kids and gangs that hang around the ave at night like zombies just looking for trouble. There's a high probability that you'll be targeted to get mugged if you walk around the ave. at 1 am - that is if you get off the J train safely without getting robbed on the train itself! As a rule of thumb, anywhere along the J or A isn't going to be an idyllic neighborhood. You'll pretty much never see anyone like yourself on the J train, which is filthy. An alternative is to take the Q11 or Q53 from Queens mall down Woodhaven Blvd, but both are always crowded and full of punks going to Far Rock. I'd suggest looking into Sunnyside or Woodside, which are friendly Irish neighborhoods near the 7 train, only about 20 minutes to midtown.
i disagree....i take the J train frequently and find it to be very safe....i used to play pool a lot on jamaica avenue and 116th street....never saw any trouble over there. and i see all ethnicities on the j train. maybe very late at night the danger may increase. but i think that holds true for any subway line. i can't even remember the last time i read about crime of a violent nature in the paper about that area. if it was such a problematic neighborhood i'm sure it would have received some sort of media attention.
especially park lane south, very quiet neighborhood.
so enlighten me....what gangs are in woodhaven? bloods? crips? because i have never heard of any gang activity in that neighborhood. i'm not disputing your claims, i would just like some factual evidence to support them, as i find them very hard to believe.
I'm not sure what gangs are there, they might just be groups of teens that cause trouble. My point is it appears to be a nice quiet, suburban-like neighborhood, but it's really not completely safe to walk around in that secluded area at night. The SWAT team used to come to my building (normal looking pre-war) a couple times a month to round people up or just report to some call. Park Lane South is better because it's right by the park and farther from Jamaica Ave. But he'd still have to get off on Jamaica Ave. to get home, which isn't completely safe. It's also not the most aesthetically pleasing street. Everything looks rusted and run down.
The J train goes through some of the worst areas in New York City and for the average white dude it's not a great idea to be on at 1 am alone in my opinion.

well i think its not a great idea for anybody to be on the train after 1 am....black people get robbed too....but thats besides the point. you would be surprised, the J train used to be pretty bad to ride at night but thats not the case today. and if i'm walking home at 1 am, aesthetics would be the last thing on my mind lol
Yeah it's definitely not as bad as it was in the mid 90s. I have had friends of friends get robbed at gun point on the J though, but they were tourists looking at maps riding around East New York looking lost, basically sitting ducks.
You're right, 15 years ago, I as a filipino dude wearing business clothes would have no hope in hell riding the J at 11 PM, yet no one seemed to bother me for the few months that I did.
I suppose a lot of it is paranoia and fear rather than seeing people as people, but its never a good idea to be too naive, especially in New York!

of course....i remember there was a time that you would not dare get off at broadway/east new york, not even to transfer to another train. nowadays anytime i go there, day or night, there's cops right next to the little store....things have changed dramatically...
