How can I go about getting a decent 2 Bd apartment in NYC due to bankruptcy. I have been searchinv for the past 6 months for a decent nice neighborhood to raise my teenage daughter and 2 pocketbook pooches and all the real estate brokers keep showing me ratchet 2 bd room apt rentals. There is no way I can accept. I have a steady nyc civil service job for 7 years which is a stable job. Im willing to pay up to $1500 out of my own pocket. Im not participating in any programs. I accept any offer but I prefer Manhattan or Queens due to traveling purposes for my job. Any suggestions or tips from anyone, it is well appreciated. Thanks.

$1500 places you outside most of Manhattan. Have you looked into Riverdale/Kingsbridge areas? Good quality of life, decent transit options and generally a good place for kids.

Get a secured credit card, and start making payments on time to increase your credit score. Any outstanding balances, on your bills clear them off. Your score will increase, and options will start to look better for you

Your low budget of $1500 for a 2 bedroom is why you keep getting shown ratchet apartments. Even my area of the Bronx, 2 bedrooms now cost $1800. Up your budget and I'm sure nicer apartments will be shown to you.

I think he can only pay up to $1500 for 2 bedroom apt , but because he doesn't want to.

He is on a budget, I think if he gets rid of his pet , he may have some extra money for a better 2 bedroom apts

Another problem is he is broke and not many landlord are willing to rent to him due to his credit problems. Even if he got the extra money to pay a decent apt , he still need his landlord approval prior to move in .

Bankruptcy filing perhaps could be overcome. However there are more pressing worries for the OP.

There are households with higher incomes better credit (not a dig, just a fact) all looking for a two bedroom apartment in Manhattan *period* much less at or below $1500. You would be hard pressed to find a decent studio apartment for that kind of money. Just forget about a one or even two bedroom apartment in Manhattan and probably much of NYC for <2k per month.

$1500 isn't much. Have you considered renting a house in the Poconos and commuting like all the other thousands of civil servants do?

You are not quite priced out of the city, but a decent two bedroom in a decent neighborhood with access to the subway is closer to $2250 per month. Rego Park, Forest Hills, Flushing, Woodside.

What kind of a person would suggest "getting rid of" pets.

They aren't accessories, you know. They are living beings.

Well, I am just helping him , you know

I doubt the landlord careless about his dogs are living creatures, rather than accessories

Besides, we all knows dogs are expensive to keep

Why keep it when you can't afford the rent ?
