I am moving to NYC soon from LA and looking to buy a new car when I arrive in a month ...will be commuting to CT from my apartment in Downtown Manhattan. I do not want to live in the suburbs.
Are electric cars common there? Anyone have one? Parking garage in my new building does not seem to have an EV charing plug, so I'm thinking they're not as common in NYC? There are some around although.
Second choice is an SUV, but I'm not sure I want to drive one. I was told I should get one as they're better for winters though. Just floating that option around, but would prefer the Tesla if I can get the charging situation sorted out.

RANGER ROVER is the way to go. Connecticut always seems to get hit with more snow and wintry weather than NYC. From my experience they aren't very proficient in snow removal as other states. The past few winters here have been rough and a Tesla is really rolling the dice as a daily commuter car. The chances of a Range Rover leaving you stuck or strandard are almost zero.
If an SUV isn't what you want there are plenty of AWD luxury cars for you to choose from that will offer the same driveablity and peace of mind that the Rover will. Good luck.
Before committing to either, check the garage where you want to park. You will pay a surcharge on the Rover, both for size and for luxury vehicle, on many monthly parking contracts. The Tesla needs a charger, and I would not purchase one if you did not have a dedicated charger. Anyone I know who has one has their own garage, or charging capabilities at work, so they are not dependent upon a NYC garage for a charge. Many garages in NYC are also valet, so the extra requirements of a Tesla are just not practical at most of them.
An S500 hybrid would be a better option because you have the option to plug it in at night, not the requirement to do so, though you would need a 4Matic for winter commutes to Connecticut. Only problem is the S500 hybrid is not yet available in New York. Audi's A8 TDI Quattro would be another good consideration, IMO, since the winter traction is excellent, and the fuel economy is good.
You will also need a set of winter tires, so if your garage cannot store the All-season/summer tires, you will need to look into storage options. It's not for Manhattan that you would need the winter tires, as most times ASRs are fine, but it's the Connecticut commute as Coastal Connecticut can get more in the way of ice storms when there is rain in the city, just as Westchester above 287 can have snow, with rain in Midtown. I would also get a second set of rims on which you leave the snow tires permanently mounted, but be sure to get a set of strong rims, not highly fashionable rims, as they will take a beating on the roads during winter.
Between the two, I'd take the Range Rover, but I'd also look at sedans as there are many more garages that can handle a sedan versus an SUV. I've run into that problem with SUVs in Manhattan, not being able to park in some garages, and limited space availability in others, with a Rover and a Lexus LX, since a smaller crossover is usually not a problem. In terms of practicality, not just parking for your residence, but anywhere else you may drive and want to park in a garage, it's usually much easier to park a sedan.

Tesla Model S P85D has all wheel drive with 691 hp and 687 pounds of torque and insane mode which launches you from 0-60 in 3.2 seconds if that's your sort of thing.

Can you do the math and tell me how fast it launches from 0 to NYC's speed limit?
In Manhattan, you're lucky if you get up to 30 MPH. Unless, of course, you're driving between 1 and 4am... then you may get up to 50 MPH
