A friend of mine has a nice 1BR in Bay Ridge and pays $850 in rent. It's possible to find a nice place for under $1000!

Queens: Astoria, Sunnyside, Woodside, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Rego Park, Kew Gardens, Briarwood, Ridgewood (all considered to be safe; all on subway lines)

I think it may be possible to find a $1000 in all of those neigbhorhoods, though some places you might have to go up to $1100.

I've seen real 1 bedrooms in my neighborhood go for $850/$900. So it is certainly possible to find places to live for under $1,000. However if you want a nice apartment in the outer-boroughs without serious quirks (really old bathrooms, odd pipes coming out of the walls, wood floors that don't match in adjoining rooms, dumpster views, etc) then you will probably have to pay around $1,000 - $1,100 for a 1br.

I agree much of Washington Heights/Inwood is pretty slummy. I am talking about the areas east of Broadway especially. There are a few decent pockets west of Broadway but most of the Heights/Inwood is the ghetto. Violent crime is a problem. It comes with the drugs, poverty and broken families. The other suggestions are okay. Jackson Heights though is so so. You have to investigate. That is for anywhere though.

Thanks everyone for your input! I don't plan on moving until August...and it scares me to leave Philly...where I pay $650 for an awesome studio in a great part of the city. I know I won't find that in NY, but it's good to hear that it can be done in some areas under 1K

SOmetimes I see apts in Brooklyn (Williamsburg, Clinton Hill, Bushwik, etc) for less than a $1000. Like $600-900. Is it safe to say there may be something off about it or the area? I thought those were supposed to be nice areas for the most part...

I got a 1 bedroom (no roommate) on the Astoria/E. Elmhurst border for just $750. It sounded too good to be true to me, but I checked it out and it seemed fine. I have hot water and heat included. It's really clean and my landlord is really nice. I checked out another one for 750 and it seemed fine too. Just have to check those places out; some may be fine, some may be dumps. My landlord said he has his low because he doesn't care about making a profit. Sometimes you'll find nice landlords like that.

I assume you mean you see shares listed for that amount. I suppose it is conceivable (but highly unlikely) that some studios might cost $900, but expect to spend at least $1000 a month for almost anything in closer-in areas of brooklyn.

Bushwick is not a 'nice area' for the most part.

And realtors love to list apartments in neighborhoods that they are not actually in.

Also, the past few days someone has been totally spamming the craigslist apartments for rent board with non-existent, impossible-to-believe listings. The headings have weird characters and punctuation in them and there is text in the body that is almost white (besides the regular black text). an example is

$1000 $$$Good Loc<ation + Close to subways + Lots of options to choo?se%%%

Default Staten Island

It's pretty easy to find studios and one bedrooms on Staten Island for under $1000 if you don't mind the commute and feeling like you're in a suburb even though Staten is technically NYC.
