Hello my friends! I'm in need of an experience-based answer.
Should I be coming to search for an apartment in NY on a weekday (Mon-Thu) or a weekend (Fri-Sun)?
I am basically taking all of my luggage and moving to Manhattan. I'll probably stay at a hotel for the first few days until I find a place to live.
Weekdays should be more active for brokers and rentals, right? Does it make sense to come to NYC on Monday, spend less time and money at a hotel, and find an apartment sooner?
Or should one come here on Friday/Saturday, and get to know the city for a few days before hunting for an apartment? I am guessing the cultural transition would be easier this way.
What's your take on it? Have you ever been in such situations before? What should I do?
Most import an thing is to make enough for the apartment, be able to prove this with a job, be able to afford the going rate of rents.
Yes you should know the neighborhoods of the city and where you want to live.
Well I've acquired a 2-year contract here and need a place to stay. I have calculated my budget, I know the areas I'll be staying in. These are not the issues.
The thing is, I don't want to rent an apt. online, I need to see it first. But until I do so, I'll have to spend my time somewhere. At the same time I'll try to adjust myself and blend in a little bit, avoid dangerous neighborhoods and rush hours, buy a bicycle, etc... Hence the weekend/weekday dilemma. Does that make sense?
Tell a broker what your budget is and what kind of neighborhood you are looking for and they will work with that. Or you can tell people here your budget/what you're looking for and they can point you in the right direction.
It might be hard to find something at the last minute but not impossible. I don't think weekends vs weekdays should be an issue.
