I'm considering moving to Riverdale for more space but I'm afraid I won't like it. Will the commute to the city be terrible? Will I get frustrated that it's basically suburbia - as in, I can't just walk out my door and go to the corner store? Everyone says only old people live there? Will I go into the city as much for evenings out or will I end up thinking the schlep is too much? OR will I find out its the best thing I ever did....HELP!

Take a few walks there, instead of getting trapped on the internet.

Go there and experience it, Riverdale is a great place but only you will know if you want to be there by literally being there.

There are quite a few threads here on Riverdale, specifically about various buildings. I agree with the advice you have received to go spend time up there. For a treat, you can take in Wave Hill on one of your visits.

it depends where in riverdale are you in ?

north riverdale or south riverdale ?

west 238 street of southeast riverdale is still walking distance to the second last stop of the 1 Train

and

plenty of shops around by foot without the needs of car

but do expect about 50 mins ride to midtown from second last stop of the 1 train and 10 mins walk to subway

more than an hour to downtown manhattan for sure
e
you pretty much narrow down to edge of southeast riverdale if u wanna take subway ride

otherwise, you will need to pay extra extra for express bus service or metro- north

oh thank you!! great intel. It would be ideal to be nearest to the #1 train. I need to research the express buses and how they work. Not sure, but I might consider keeping a car. I hear garages are cheaper than in the city.
Again, thank you!

Riverdale is beautiful, but believe me when i tell you - the commute to midtown Manhattan or anywhere below that during weekends will be a pain in the booty.

One other tip.

Whatever you do, don't ever say Riverdale is in the Bronx. There are some residents that seem to take great offense to that fact.

I think the "problem" with Riverdale is that if you're close to Metro North in Spuyten Duyvil, that area is farther from the stores and you'll need a car. I'm hoping to move to Riverdale in a few years after I retire. I would like to be able to take the express bus to the theater district once in a while for a show if I can afford it!

In the Spuyten Duyvil area of Riverdale, there is a free bus that takes you down to and from the Metro-North station on 225th St. If you are willing to spend extra on Metro-North, that bus may well be worth it for time saving reasons.
