All the more reason why he should've understood where the problem lies with "gun violence". Reactionary or not, his Safe Act has created a world of headaches for law abiding citizens, while at the same time having zero effect on the type of animal that ultimately killed him. NY politicians need to wake the hell up out of their PC and racial politics haze, stop blaming the NRA and white gun owners - within NY and from other states - and start treating violent animals the way violent animals need to be treated: euthanasia.

It's tragic to lose anyone this way, especially someone with such talent and accomplishment.

Do you think any serious change will take place, or will it just remain a sorrow to his family?
They'll probably end up cancelling J'ouvert all together. In fact with the rapid gentrification occurring in that area of BK I wouldn't be surprised if the Carnival gets moved out to SE Queens in 10 years...

They need a show for the purveyors of rapid gentrification. That's why they come - keepin' it real.

Next year, for the first time, J'ouvert will have to apply for a permit, giving the Police Commissioner a chance for oversight on the plan. At that point, Bratton could cancel it although he's said he wants to keep it if possible. He says it depends largely on whether he gets a better local event-organizing committee that'll work with police beforehand on keeping the neighborhood safe. This year's committee he called "the most disorganized committee, ever."

That leaves it up to the neighborhood's political leaders to decide now what will happen next.

Three gangs all going at each other with semi-automatics across a crowded intersection is more like Somalia and Bosnia, and not a typical Crown Heights night. Whoever thinks it's so important to keep J'ouvert had better figure out whether all this pain and the extrarodinary amount of additional violence it invites to the neighborhood is something to continue to foster here.

You can't have it both ways. Here are two responsible ways to go next: either a new committee gets onboard with police to help make it a controllable event, or the organizers say that's not possible, so just cancel it to protect the participants, spectators and area residents.

As a resident, I can respect either choice. What I can't respect is doing nothing for a year, then hitting the roof when Bratton's word cancels it. He's asked for local cooperation, and given plenty of time to fix the management of this event for next year.

Not a fan of guns and I do think there needs to be less guns in the nation.

With that said the disaster that this part of Brooklyn was for years isn't because of guns. It's because of socioeconomic policies. Poor Black neighborhoods are the worst because the US instead of dealing with marginalization on the basis of race, just threw welfare at poor Blacks. So you ended up with neighborhoods of people who don't work, have poor levels of education, and overall poor levels of functionality. If that is dealt with crime in these neighborhoods would go down.

And while actual violent criminals definitely need to be dealt with by law enforcement it is important to cut off the breeding grounds for this sort of behavior. Fortunately for all New York's problems we actually are light years ahead of this from cities like Chicago or Detroit. Gentrification, corporate investment, and immigration have all helped. So has government policies that encourage development. Even MTA expansion helped (far West Side being developed in part because of the 7 train).

You know from your work there are plenty of law abiding people in these ghettos. Integrate them into the mainstream and cut off the violent criminals, and you go along way from having the breeding ground that producers more criminals. I would also say birth control and roe vs wade has helped lower crime in NYC too.

That. They really have no choice but to cooperate with the police on this or the city will simply deny them permits in the future.

They should burn it down and build a baseball field there instead.
