It would be helpful to know what constitutes a long commute to you.
Some people think that 30-50 minutes is a long, long commute. HA.
Brooklyn Heights, Downtown Brooklyn, Park Slope, Fort Greene, Williamsburg, DUMBO are going to be a quick commute...probably under 30 minutes. If you are willing to commute longer a lot of neighborhoods outside of that would be fine (more space, lower rent too) like Red Hook, Prospect Heights, Bay Ridge.
Maybe consider some neighborhoods in Queens as well. Astoria/LIC is close to Manhattan.
Really depends on what area of Manhattan (I'm assuming you meant Manhattan vs NYC) you need to be in. If you need to be in Midtown, that's very different than if you need to be in the Financial District.
dumbo. Its an awesome place. You need to move there right now. There are some awesome 1bd room apts there for sale now... buy it while you can, before you get priced out forever.
