The northern part of Mount Vernon, "Fleetwood", near the Bronxville border is actually quite nice. Once you go to the Southern part of Mount Vernon it gets bad.

Thats why I warned about the public schools, but the OP says he doesn't have kids.

Why not live nearer Stamford? It's convenient to Metro-North, you won't have to pay NY-rate real estate taxes and there are good schools.

You might consider Harlem, while you're at it. If you were a short walk to the 125th St. station at Park Ave., that might be the best of both worlds.

You probably want to live in Riverdale. It's in the North Bronx, its safe, its beautiful and its affordable. It's north of the city, but still in a borough which is good so you can still call yourself a New Yorker. You would also have convenient access to the Metro North Railroad which will take you all over the place. Check out Craigslist.com for apts in Riverdale, it sounds like the place for you.

why would anyone consider moving to a ghetto when they can afford much better locales?

Well, Harlem isn't what it used to be. Still a tough place, maybe, for palefaces, but if you don't stick out so much and don't have to worry about sending kids to the public schools yet, it could be a cool place to be.

Northern Mt. Vernon is very nice, near Fleetwood off the Cross County Parkway. It blends into Bronxville almost seamlessly there.
