Can you find studio apartment rentals for under US$1,000.00 a month in the Bronx? (apartments, home)

For the longest time I have been wanting to live in NYC, but on a social worker-slash-substitute teacher's salary, it feels like a pipe dream. It seems that even in the parts of town that many consider "bad," you can't find any apartments that won't break your bank. I am so torn because I am considering moving to Chicago (and I've already seen plenty of great studio apartments and even 1-bedrooms between 700-900 in very nice parts of town), but doing that would mean being much farther away from family and friends (I currently live in CT). If I moved to NYC, I would be in the middle of the big city like I have always wanted, still relatively close to people I care for in CT...but paying impossibly high rents. And no, I don't want to live in New Britain, CT anymore. It's simply soul deadening in terms of how boring it is (in my opinion).

Is it possible to find a studio in the Bronx that costs less than US$1,000.00 to rent?

Look on Streeteasy.com. Enter Bronx as your location. You can filter by price too. But you may have to come up a bit in price. Plus, even if you see something in your price range, it would probably be in a sketchy area or building. Your best bet is probably a share.

Cheapest studio that's not a complete rats nest tend to start at $1200.

Try Craigslist to see if any studio in that price

But there will be some scams online regardless

Under $1000 seems low even for Bronx

So u may run into scam than people willing to pay a little more than a 1k

I think the thousand dollar apartment is a thing of the past unless you can land an "affordable."

Possibly Staten Island might be cheaper. I just read they are going to be running more ferries, so maybe that's a place to start.

Also, getting a roommate at pretty much any age is relatively common in NYC so you could look into that. It would allow you to live in a nicer apartment and nicer area.

I'm just surprised that in NYC, nobody has used their office cubicles as their dorms yet. Many young Japanese workers live in their office cubicles in Tokyo since the rent prices are even more outrageous and price of home ownership is unobtainable for the current generations.

I really don't know current studio prices, but it's true rent has gone up a lot in the Bronx recently. If you get a 2 bedroom for $1500 and share, you'd pay $750. It's much more economical than having your own place.

So when you get fired for using your office as a bedroom, then you get evicted and fired on the same day since it's one and the same. Seems like too big of a risk.

While I agree that sharing is much more economical ,I think a 2 br for $1,500 might be as impossible to find as a studio for $1,000. At least that's the case in my neighborhood where $1,500 has become the bottom of the barrel price for a not so great 1 br in a problematical building.
