I'm considering moving to New Jersey (work in Midtown Manhattan) and according to Google Maps the quickest route into the city would be by bus over the George Washington Bridge. I've never been around that area during rush hour...how long would it realistically take with traffic?
Have you ever put on 1010 wins or cbs traffic reports and heard the GWB and the cross Bronx NOT backed up? Its like a perpetual recording that they keep replaying.

You are going to hit traffic daily, you will just have to add time for that to your commute. Whatever Google Maps is telling you for how long it will take you I would add an extra hour.
A couple I knew use to drive in everyday from North Jersey. They left the house before 7am to avoid major traffic. Now that is not to say they didn't hit traffic, it was just not as bad at the hour. They eventually moved to the middle of Jersey and took the train in.
I lived in hackensack (by rt 4) and work near Columbus Cirlce. The bridge is unpredictable... If its raining, accident thenit will take an hour just to get to the gwb terminal.... That commute made me move into the city
There is heavy traffic on every nearby Hudson crossing at rush hour.
Best bets for commuting to Midtown from NJ are train towns (assuming the tunnels stay open, lots of threads about that already), Weehawken, Hoboken, and Jersey City near a PATH station.
If you get to the bridge before 7, it's better. I learned that last year when I had to commute frequently to LGA from Central NJ (66 miles each way). The GWB, however, is usually the least backed up of the Hudson River crossings from NJ.
Traffic on 1010WINS is on the 1s; i.e., 6:01, 6:11, 6:21, etc. Take the time to listen to it over a few days at the time you plan to commute to get an idea of the general pattern.
I love that bridge. It's gorgeous and a piece of engineering genius and the view of the city is breathtaking. But the traffic sucks at rush hour.
Unfortunately, it's also very popular for suicides.
