I was renting out my house in Nassau last year when we had a really cold month and the tenants managed to get my gas & electric bill up to almost $800. Man, do I hate LIPA/Keyspan.

Holy you know what! Did you make them pay for it?

I really couldn't but they were on a month to month basis, so it was adios to them.

I think Coned is sheisty as heck. I'd be very careful with them. Sometimes my bill will spike up out of nowhere. I once received a really ridiculous bill from them, and I had to call. Thankfully it was resolved rather quickly and they acknowledged they made a mistake in their readings. Keep an eye on your utility bill folks!

Default Residential Utilities in NYC

If any one would like to switch their utilities from ConEd, you have that option now. The big "C" will still send you your bill with the new supplier's name shown on it, and C will continue to read your meter and maintain the equipment but, the new supplier offers you substantial savings and great incentives to switch at not cost to you. If you want to review this energy company's site, send me an email and I'll gladly forward the information I received to you.

Oh, so you can actually choose there now? Are there a lot of competitors? Where I live, our electric co. pretty much has a monopoly, but I heard TX just passed a bill where other companies can now compete, but I would worry about reliability.

I'm on the computer all day in my studio/sep. kit. I don't have a/c in the summer but a fan -- sometimes two. My summer bills (including gas, which I hardly use) can run over $140. My latest was about $94.

That thing about compact fluorescents lowering your bills? Completely true! All my bulbs except my three-way table lamp and my halogen (which never goes above dim glow), and it's definitely made a difference.

Default Help! Gas therms.

I need some comparables please! Our gas bill seems to be way too high!

We have a 1 Bedroom 620 sf apartment and here's what we are paying in the last year (gas & electric). Our gas usage comes from: furnace, stove, clothes dryer, water tank & the rest is elec.

We are in a 1 year old building so very new and I think there is a problem with the gas usage (too high!) so someone please share your usage in therms.

Cost 2008 (electric + gas) & therms
Jan: $154 - 55
Feb $289 - 108
Mar: $195 - 62
Apr: $132 - 27
May 100 - 13
Jun 127 - 11
Jul 140 - 8
Aug 136 - 10
Sep 92 - 9
Oct 102 - 18
Nov 182 - 46
Dec 220 - 64

We have 2 people in our apt & we are not at home during the day & turn the temperature down.
