is it still a dangerous place to live, how common are muggings , violent assaults, shootings, robberies, etc?

are New Yorkers tougher in comparison to people from California? I heard people in NYC get into confrontations / arguments / standoff more often?

New York City is currently one of the safest big cities in the USA to live in.

Give it another 4 years under De Blasio and you might get your Taxi Driver New York.

Doesn't look like it. So far we are on track for yet another record low crime rate this year. The crime rate has done nothing but go down since he took office. I don't think it has anything to do with him but let's get real about crime in NYC.

Yes New Yorkers are tougher, but it's safe here. I often can't imagine what the Lower East Side was like in the 80s when I see what it is now.

Many New Yorkers like to think of themselves as tougher. In reality they're just strung out, exhausted and stressed.

Mostly still safe unless you venture into certain areas like many other US cities have as well. New Yorkers are tough but not specifically in the sense of street smart. The fast pace, crowded conditions and cost of living make one resilient and emotionally strong. Many endure a lot to live here long term. Yet many are good natured and quick to help someone need. Seen it time and again.
