My brother is a C/O 8 years on and he hates his job forced O/T nonstop and their O/T is another full shift 8+ hours almost everyday, plus driving to Rikers everyday brutal......as far as pay, he hasnt made 130k you say they make, he pretty much is equal with me every year and i'm a S/w 10+ Years but he does a hell of alot more O/T than me with NO down time and about 3 times the commute

That does not make any sense, according to what you just said he works 8+ hours of OT almost everyday. The salary of a CO is 90k after 5 years which means he should be bringing in 130k easy with all the OT he is doing.
Yes , you start with anywhere from 1-2 weeks or so depending on time of year you get hired and as you get to top you go up in steps to 27 days I believe
I was friends with one CO... He left to be and Fdny EMT making much less... Said it was the worst job he'd ever seen ... But if u have no other city offers, and your far away on this list... Of course take it
I still would not give up being a San Man for CO, you are in jail just like a criminal only difference is a bit more freedom and you get to go home for 2 days. Can't even have a phone in there with you.

Your hilarious . Nyc doc has a higher base than sanitation . And has more ot usually . At top pay 5.5 years your near 94k . Either your bull****ting , or your brother can't even handle a 45 hour week .
Doc has so much mandatory ot because they're understaffed because the job is undesirable. Money isn't everything- a large portion of San workers will decline being promoted because they don't want to deal with the nonsense of being a supervisor. Peace of mind is more important than money to most people. Why do you think the pay is higher all around and there is more ot? Because the job is dangerous and stressful, and to attract people to the job and keep them from leaving.
Source: know someone who works in corrections and someone who left within the past 2 years because the job is too rough
