I have a friend coming from overseas and lwill land at Phily. She needs a way to transport from Phily(City) to JFK airport. Is there a shuttle bus that she can take? or what about the train?

She doesn't speak/understand English, so I have to find an easy way for her. A direct shuttle bus is ideal, but I don't know if there is any departing from Phily.

Thanks,

R9

Not sure if there is a direct bus from Philly to JFK airport but the Chinatown buses are a very popular and cheap way to get from Philly to NYC. She would then need a way to get from Chinatown in Manhattan to the airport which in a cab would be $50+.

Check Apexbus - Daily Chinatown bus New York,Philadelphia,DC,Richmond,Atlanta,Norfolk

Also, check Greyhound. I've been able to book seats on Greyhound (not to Phila but to DC) for about the same price as the Chinatown bus. Checking the website, I see that the Phila-NYC fare is only $13 by booking online. Chinatown buses pick you up on the street, and if the weather's bad there's no shelter. Greyhound leaves from and arrives at a terminal and runs more frequently.

Once she arrives at Port Authority in New York, she can take a bus to JFK. The ticket counter for airport buses is on street level, near the 42nd St. entrance.

If they don't want to deal with the busses tell her to take the train. (In Philly) Take the EL Train to 30th street station and the train will go straight to New York (which is a faster 45 mins to a hour trip instead of the 2 hour trip by bus). There are shuttle busses that go to JFK from 42nd street in New York, the first time I did it I took Greyhound from Philly-NYC then took the shuttle bus (which is right outside of where Greyhound drops you off) to JFK.

Yeah I'd take the train. There is a commuter train that stops right outside of the airport in Philly. Go to 30th street station, take Amtrak up to Penn Station NY (make sure your friend doesn't get off at Newark, NJ which is also called Penn Station, but "Penn Station Newark" instead of "Penn Station New York.")

You can actually get the airport shuttle directly from Penn Station: The Most Departures To Manhattan - New York Airport Service (Don't know where you pick it up at Penn Station though, as I have only done it from Grand Central) $15 to the airport, drops you off at your terminal.

good idea but terrible info, the best way to make the trip,
there is a train right in the PHL airport, take that to the 30 st station get an amtrak to NY Penn Sta. from there she can take LIRR to jamaica station, there she gets the airtrain to JFK

Amtrak's fine -- unless your friend is trying to economize. Even the cheapest Acela local is $43.

regardless of her language issues, there is no easy or more direct way to make the trip

Ronin, I suggest you e-mail her some word documents that she can print out before she comes that state her needs clearly and succintly, such as "Need bus to NYC" and one that says "Greyhound ticket counter?" etc. Since this is a friend, I assume you share a language, and you can explain the translations (or put them in smaller type) for her.

She's very brave. I would be quite intimidated at the idea of traveling alone to a country where I did not speak the language.
