No. Not really. If you look at the totality of NYCs homeless population, there are some that can get their lives back together. The ones that can, likely will on their own. BTW, these are the homeless you don't actually see. they may have been drop kicked, but they figure out a way to get along until they can really get back on track. There are a lot of drug and alcohol addicts, and mentally ill that are just beyond reclamation. The bums you see on the street generally fall into this category.

I for one am alittle nervous to step foot in Manhattan come new year's eve. Theres been mutiple articles from legitimate sources (infowars, the blaze, RT) about a homeless bath salts induced apocalypse come December 31st. Just sayin'

As for my general contempt for the lazy and unwilling to work, I can only hope and pray that churches dont help them one bit and God lowers NY's thermostat by alot. As much as they love living in the streets without a care in the world, they dont deserve this weather that you and I are enjoying.

Mental illness is often caused by childhood trauma. If we treated people better in a myriad of ways there would likely be far fewer mentally ill people. They have stories and many are harrowing.

Connectedly, if we did not have such a violently-guarded and inflexible notion of "normal," we would probably find ourselves with a better working definition of abnormal. Keep in mind that historically, rebellious women and gay people were routinely incarcerated as insane. This also has race lines that I will not even get into.

At the same time, there are also people where something is wrong. And we should take care of them, from birth. The parent(s) should and we should collectively, as a society.

If the mental illness is pedophilia or serial murder they should be eliminated.

The great Ronald Reagan who was raised in poverty by a drunk dad applied personal responsibility and boot strapping to become Ted Cruz's and most republicans obsolete hero today. Though he had Alzheimer's and naivety I dont believe that constitutes mental illness and I dont think he was homeless during his B movie career which lasted at a minimum of a decade or two. Your intelligent Harlem Resident but you may be wrong.

Anyone who did that should be grateful that the universe gave them the strength to overcome that.
Most people do not have that strength. Or not everyone, anyway.

Hey Harlem resident, who of the 59k will have the strength to apply darwin's survival of homeless to overcome tonight's weather and harassing government officials who pretend to care about them in your opinion while we smile infront of our fire places and pretend to care about them.

Is it me or does the OP have a point?

Yeah it was rhetorical, my narcissistic self needed some affirmation from others for once. How are you and how do you think the homeless are holding up in this cool weather we're getting blessed with shelter from? I just put another log on my fire and lit a cuban with a hundred dollar bill. Happy new years a few days late (I am a bit out of touch and the out of touch essesence has gotten me to the honorable position I command today)

I have an idea - the homeless could be put to work rolling Cubans. We could send them to train.

That plan aside, they want to protest the current culture and they are doing that by insisting on staying where they are. I respect this.

We should all buy them hot beverages and snacks when we see them. Give them $10.
