Biggest fare evasion is entirely legal and occurs on NYC/MTA buses.
Have given up how many times someone gets on, puts their card in and gets an error message, only to be waved on by bus driver. That and or they board and give some sad tale of woe and misery (I lost my MC, I just put money on my MC why isn't it working....), and driver just lets them on.
Select bus service in theory are policed, but even then a good number of people just board and take their chances.
Back in my day when a bus driver spotted someone getting on back of bus without paying, or walked past him doing same he'd shut things down until passenger either paid or got off. Have not seen that in decades.

But if you are a young woman, or a woman in general especially with kids, it's okay, HOP ON! I get it, i do, but still. I should have been left on. I can't wait to turn elderly and toss everyone outta their seats on the bus.

Yes, it does depend on a few factors. From what one has seen if the driver has already pulled away from curb then you're good to go. Rules do not allow them to pick-up or discharge passengers any place else but at curbside/bus stops.... Suppose they *could* tell you to get off at next stop, but in my experience that never seems to happen.
Rode a bus south on Lexington avenue a few months ago where at nearly every stop driver waved one or more passengers on for free.
I noticed middle school or high school students are the big offenders. They wait till people get off the bus through the back door and they just hop on. The bus driver doesn't do anything.

Again nothing new, same thing happened when growing up on SI, but again drivers then often stopped bus, shut off motor and refused to move if offending non-paying *passenger* didn't pay or get off. Kids usually busted out with "I forgot my bus pass" or some lame excuse.
Think reason why drivers don't confront those that get on without paying is a safety issue. With so many having been assaulted or whatever recently they stay behind that glass and that is that. Drivers can signal for NYPD back-up, but don't know if a single fare evasion would trigger.
And yes, I AM broke. But to have the freedom that an unlimited metrocard provides one in this city feels like FREEDOM. If I had to think that I just spend 2.75 or whatever each fare is per ride now I would go insane and my quality of life in this city (which is already at an all time low) would plummet to the point of massive depressive crap.
It's all dollars and cents. An unlimited card is a waste of money if you take fewer than 47 rides per month. I cannot ever break even with an unlimited card so I take as many $1.35 rides I wish and save money.

I buy the unlimited. Usually always make my money's worth on it. However this last month, the unlimited card was an epic fail. With being sick for a week and then all the cold days and not venturing out, I just gave mta money....
Unlimited card is definitely not worth it for me. I only use it to commute back and forth to work (I either stay home or drive on weekends, not really interested in going into Manhattan on weekends anymore!), and I rarely have a week where I'm in the office 5 days - I either work at home one day, am driving to our Philly office, or to NJ to my client.
I've done the math again and again. I was having $120 deducted pre-tax and loaded into my WageWorks account, and I had a ton of surplus (in additon to a spare MetroCard with $50 - maybe more - in my wallet). I like having some extra on the card in case I need to take MetroNorth or LIRR for something but last month it was well over $150 extra. I did just learn you can use the card with Uber Pool. I just reduced it to $100 a month and will revisit mid year.

I can beat you on that one. First month after moving in, end of December 2010, I bought an unlimited card and rode to Astor Liquors to stock my "bar." HUGE snowstorm/blizzard right after Christmas choked the City. Then I caught the flu. So for that month I took 2 rides at about $30 each. Lesson learned.
