Western Beef is okay for the most part. There are some locations that are better than others. I would place Western Beef above a hood supermarket but below a nice one. Their generic brands are not very good and like I said some locations are better than others, they also don't have a lot of variety. The pros are the prices are pretty good and they have parking. The quality of the meat is decent but you gotta still check for quality.
Western Beef...isn't that the place that has all sorts of health code violations? Eh...
Like I said, the Stop & Shop in Co-op City is a much nicer experience. Or you can drive to Westchester County. When I lived in NYC, I shopped at that CTown on WPR (which was decent), got my meat from SNS/Pathmark and purchased my fresh veggies from the Korean grocer next door to the CTown. I liked the Korean places..lots of fresh, exotic veggies and fruits.
I live on the other side of the Bronx, and I shop at our local Foodtown (for every day stuff) - gotta expect the inevitable fights with little old Italian ladies tho! For most things, or anything specialty, it's Fairway in Pelham for me. I've been going to TJ's in Scarsdale a lot lately...obviously I have a car so this helps.
How so? It has everything the Stop and Shop has plus a whole lot of specialty items /imported stuff you can't get in a regular supermarket.
Starting with the size compared to your traditional supermarket for starters. Also would you buy bathroom or kitchen supplies there? Not at all slamming the place but would only buy certain things there. Very good selection on cheeses, Deli, and cooked meals.
Foodtown on 204th in Norwood, Morton Williams on Kingsbridge Rd. and C-town on Katonah Ave in Woodlawn.
I also like Pioneer on Webster in Bedford Park (but I know that's not what you're looking for). The people working there are really nice and it's open 24/7.
I also recommend Garden Gourmet on Broadway between 233rd and 234th. Its like the Whole Foods of the Bronx with a huge selection of cheeses and other foods you wont find anywhere else. Most of the people who shop here seem to be Jews from Riverdale.
Do you have a car? Depending where you are, A lot of people hit Stew Leornards off of the Thruway near home depot. If you want to pay the toll on the Westside, You have Fairway.
Yes I have a car. I'm willing to travel anywhere. I would even go to Yonkers if I have to.. as long as the supermarket its nice...
