I'm interested in writing a story on "a day in the life" of a Staten Island ferry boat captain. Wondering how I could locate one and get in touch. I have tried all the press agents at the NYC DOT and no one responded to my inquiry. Anybody have a possible lead?

You have to go through the NYCDOT. If they don't respond try the Borough Presidents office. They are very security conscious over there, perhaps overly so. I doubt they would agree to a story, but I guess it won't hurt to try.

Here's an idea....

Get off your duff, get on a SI Ferry and walk up to a captain (or ask to be introduced to one by a deckhand) and make your pitch. The responses will range from "no", to instructions on the proper procedure to arranging such an interview.

Know where a few live on Staten Island (fathers and or relatives of friends) but aren't going to tell you that information.
