Coney Island is gang-infested for sure with a very high crime rate.
However, if you take the subway to Stillwell (the last stop in Coney Island, near the beach) during the day (not at night - not recommended at all) and don't venture from the beach/boardwalk area and certainly don't venture east of Stillwell (to any of the streets beyond, say, East 14th Street), you'll probably be okay.

To be honest, it's a filthy beach though, and again, a high-crime area.

Just west of Coney Island, Brighton Beach is quite a bit safer on the whole.

I think I arrived at Coney Island Stillwell stop around 4:30 or 5 pm on a Saturday (in November).

I'e been going to Coney Island forever and never found it sketchy, I think it's definitely worth checking out

You should be fine as long as you stay away from the projects (and even then it's very unlikely anything would happen to you)

The worst parts of Queens are Jamaica and parts of Far Rockaway.

For Brooklyn definitely check out more than Williamsburg. Bed-Stuy in Brooklyn has gentrified considerably and it's not unsafe during the day.

Also when visiting a city like NYC, even Brooklyn and Queens I'd recommend you go see well off and bad neighborhoods. If you just visiting the richest parts of Brooklyn then you haven't seen Brooklyn. Ditto for Queens.

I have plenty of times during the day taken the subway to Coney Island to the Beach and to the Amusement Park or to the New York Aquarium. No one ever bothered me and I never felt unsafe.

Did I visit the projects, deal drugs, hang out in the streets? No. If you're going to a neighborhood like that to engage in criminal activity it's probably not wise and not safe. But going as a tourist to the beach, to the amusement park, or in the winter time to the Aquarium? It's totally safe.

I agree with you. I never found it sketchy. The people with tales of horror probably were involved in stuff in Coney Island or had friends and family living there (in the projects for example) and had major issues going on.

Yeah I agree with all of this

Plus, many poor neighborhoods aren't dangerous at all

Like the people saying it's dangerous for a tourist to visit Sunset Park or Bedstuy.

One really cool thing about NYC is all the ethnic restaurants from all around the world. You could have South Asian, South American, Mexican, or East Asian in Central Queens. You could have Caribbean in places like Crown Heights or Bedstuy. You could have Russian in Brighton Beach. Just going to a white, hipster place like Williamsburg is LAME and BORING. And this is from someone who does like Williamsburg and Whole Foods, etc. That scene is not the be all and end all of NYC and is really only a small portion of it.

But yeah some of these people were involved or had friends/family involved in very unsavory things in these neighborhoods that the casual visitor wouldn't be involved in.
