Living here and around for 5.5 years, Houston splits the East Vilage and Alphabet City from each other, but Ave A and somewhat between 1st and A split Alphabet City and East Village. It has a different feel that's hard to really explain, but when I'm in Alphabet City, I feel like I'm in Alphabet City.
It's all technically the Lower East Side though if we go by historic definitions.
Aww man, I can't edit my post; I meant that Houston splits what's now known as the Lower East Side from East Village and Alphabet City. Bah!
For what it's worth, I saw businesses as far East as Avenue C with "East Village" written somewhere on them, and all the Citibike stations in Alphabet City are designated as "East Village".
Now, I'm not saying that "validates" anything, but I can see none of that area except for Avenue D and maybe Avenue C being referred to as the Lower East Side in colloquial use one day. Keep in mind all of what is now the East Village was once considered the Lower East Side, as recently as the 60s.
I'm a college student living on the UES for the semester; haven't been down to the Lower East Side/East Village section too much. Only been in the Christopher St/Bleeker St section. Are there any monuments, shopping sections, etc that you (posters) suggest worth visiting?

Both neighborhoods have great nightlife if you're into that

That's cool; certainly seems like an area to explore with friends. But since there is such an increasing young population going to the area, is nightlife really the only kind of draw? Are there other things to do during day/night that can make it worthwhile? Sorry to hijack your thread, but I'm not a huge partier by any stretch, though I enjoy exploring different sections of NYC.

There are a lot of nice restaurants there and some cool architecture, and cool little parks as well like Tompkins Square Park
If you haven't already, a great website about all goings on in EV: EV Grieve
I saw a ridiculous amount of rats there, it might even be worse than Union Square
