I want to find a cheap studio or 1 bedroom apartment in NYC (not for me for a family member), max rent $1300, preferably in Brooklyn or the Bronx, maybe even Harlem, Queens, Staten Island, or Long Island, as they are from Brooklyn and would like to stay close to jobs/school. Every time i look online for a cheap studio/1 bdroom in NYC, even out of pure curiousity just to see what the city has to offer as far as affordable rent, allll I ever find is "Rooms for rent" who tf wants to live in a room for rent, sharing a kitchen and bathroom with a bunch of strangers. Is there any website or realter i can go to, to find affordable housing, particularly studios and 1 bedroom apartments???
It's craigslist so of course there will be some questionable listings, but not all of them are going to be nonexistent or scams. One way to spot a scam is if the photos look too nice for this range. At this range, they should have very basic kitchens and not look like designer show houses.
Where have you been looking so far?
The other thing you can do is identify a neighborhood that would have apartments in your range, like, say Midwood or Sunset Park, and actually call some local realty places in those locations. Many times listings don't make it onto craigslist or streeteasy.
The way to find affordable apts. in that price range is to contact real estate agents in the desired neighborhoods and they will probably have relevant listings.
You're having a hard time finding apartments in that price range because there just isn't a ton of areas left in this city where places cost that little. Your best bet is to get hyper-local in your search: identify a neighborhood, then walk around it. Look for small mom-and-pop brokerages that service that neighborhood exclusively, look for flyers on telephone poles or at local businesses like bodegas or restaurants or laundromats, walk around and look for for-rent signs in windows. An apartment for $1300 or under is generally not going to be advertised on one of the major websites like streeteasy; these types of listings generally never make it to a major brokerage listing system because they'll rent so quickly to locals via word-of-mouth.
plenty areas in Brooklyn for a studio at that price including Bay Ridge, a few that include full 1BR units (ie Bensonhurst etc)
Agreed, you can find a studio or even a 1 bedroom in Brooklyn neighborhoods like Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Midwood, Gravesend, Sheepshead Bay.
These are all relatively safe neighborhoods; however, they remain affordable (by NYC standards) because they are in southern Brooklyn, further from Manhattan. (at least a 45 minute subway ride or so).
You can also find studios or 1 bedrooms in Brooklyn neighborhoods like Brownsville and East New York for that price, but these neighborhoods have a high crime rate.
You will not be able to find them in Brooklyn neighborhoods close to Manhattan (Park Slope, Fort Greene, Cobble Hill, not sure about Bed-Stuy), because these neighborhoods are already gentrified and are closer to Manhattan and can therefore attract a higher rent.
