I'm fascinated by apartment buildings that look gross, ugly, or super outdated on the inside (ugly looking on the outside is a bonus as well), whether it be in the lobby, hallways, or the apartments themselves.

I saw a building in the Lower East Side that looked like the interior hadn't been changed since the 70s, and from there I got the idea to make a thread.

Where can I find more buildings like that?

Any building in Chinatown.. There is a building, I believe 125 Madison Street on the corner of Mechanic's Alley, that seems to be a huge hit when it comes to movies/tv shows. They are obsessed with this nasty rathole building!!

Yes check out Chinatown. I grew up on Eldridge and Canal street.....those old tenement buildings are still intact for the most part. Real dilapidated with roaches and mice running throughout the building.

My actual apartment is very nice, but my building looks a little grungy; I love it and the terrace in back where I can see the stars at night and the wiring on the side that seems like it could start a bad fire haha. I somewhat hope I never move, but I feel like even rent stabilization has its limits and I'll need to buy eventually.

As a real estate agent i love walking into older walk up buildings that have amazing gut renovated beautiful apts. Seeing the reactions of clients sometimes from entering the lobby sometimes with hesitation until they notice the hallways on the floors are nice and then boom the apt blows them away.

I also love when i go into luxury doorman buildings with 4-8000 1br and rats are in the hallways, water bugs in the apt lol. I will always remember screams from a mother and father when they saw dead waterbugs inside the dishwasher and the daughter saying who cares i dont cook and this is near lincoln center lol.

Maybe check the DOB building violations lists to see which buildings have the most violations. Then go to street view to see how they look from the outside. I would imagine the ones that have violations for rats and things like that are going to be pretty run down.

LES & Chinatown are the best for this. But you will find at least a few good ones in a lot of areas.

Pretty much the oldest and poorest neighborhoods of the city will have what you're looking for.

Not one or the other, must be old and poor.

When I was a little kid, I used to be fascinated with this subject as well. Back then (80's) we used to take trips to the South Bronx and couldn't believe how people lived in those dilapidated burned out buildings.
