I've been talking a lot about accents lately, and am wondering if you have the accent?

I'm in Westchester and people said I even have it.

Do you have it?

No accent from me. Most people think I'm from out of state (midwest maybe?) though, I am a black guy. We all know black guys don't have "New Yawk" accents.

I'm from Brooklyn! I used to think it was funny when I was at work and people on the phone would say "you must be from Brooklyn" then after a while I didn't think it was so funny. So I made a concious effort to speak s l o w e r and pronounce my words correctly and after a while no one could tell. That went on for about a year or so until I moved to Tamarac, Fl., and eventually had a room mate from Arkansas, she had a thick accent! She was awesome too....anyway, when I moved back to Brooklyn I had this Brooklyn/Arkansas/I don't know what accent...it was pretty funny.

I later moved to Jersey and once my family followed all of my "Brooklyn" came back. My husband says when I am around my sisters I get louder and pick up speed!

I thought I didn't have an accent, but I spent a few months in California last year and everybody I met could instantly tell I was from NY... oh well.

I was born in Queens and lived there until I was 3, then moved to LI where I grew up.

My friend from Washington state said I'm the epitomy of a NY accent. She said just a few words out of my mouth and anyone could tell I'm from NY. I asked her how she could tell if I don't say a word that has an accent to it (talk, walk, coffee); she said that the tone of our voices is different. I never knew we had a certain tone to our voices.

I also can't detect an accent when I hear myself speak, but when I've traveled throughout the U.S., most people automatically know I'm from New York.
