My brother in Southern California has done it and now he and his family no longer have monthly electricity bills. There it is worthwhile but I am not sure about here.

It depends on the exact location and conditions. NYC electricity is fairly steep, but on the other hand, few people have control over their rooftops over where they live in NYC and a decent number of rooftops in NYC get plunged into darkness for long parts during the day due to shadows cast by taller buildings in the neighborhood. If the OP has their own home and control of the rooftop, then it's more likely to be a sensible step.
