Not sure if you are intentionally trying to mislead people, but FDNY discriminates in other ways. The below summarizes the discrimination towards others. Once you pass, you still have a long waiting list and have to hang out near fire departments to hear about potential openings.
Potential openings for what? It isn't like anyone can apply to each individual FDNY house or department. You have to be in already.
its mostly because of nepotism, not racism. Hell, most people who actually want to be firefighters are people who grew up around it.
That's what I was assuming. Most of the unionized blue collar work around here has a strong element of family tradition. The sand hogs are another good example.
I've been in and around this city for 13 years and though I don't know any firefighters personally, it has always struck me that the department is a bastion of old-school white dudes. I'm just curious as to how/why this is the case. Every engine I've ever seen is full of white guys, most looking pure-bred Irish. The other day, I actually saw a black engineer at the wheel and I thought to myself, "Oh my god, that firefighter is not white and they are letting him drive the truck!"
At a time when NYC demographics have never been more diverse, and less white, the FDNY seems like an anomaly. I can't think of another city agency that is so monochromatic.
Is there something in the selection process that deters applicants of color?
For whatever it's worth they also seem incredibly happy--polite, making jokes, being uncharacteristically courteous and holding open the door at Starbucks for old ladies in a me-me-me city. They are probably not like this when running into burning buildings, but, hey, maybe they are!

I believe it has to be NEPOTISM. They keep those positions among family and friends-like-family 99% of the time: sons, cousins, etc. Another thing I've noticed is how extremely handsome so many of them are. It's like they were born to be featured as hunks for posters, calendars, and mags.
There are some in NYC who are invested in the status quo (city employees,family members, etc.).
They're like pigs at the trough and they know the eatin' is good. They won't let go unless they're forced too.
As for why the FDNY is mostly white? It's a nepotistic organization and like I said, they know the eatin' is good. Ain't no way they'll let go.
It's not as if lot of these guys were choosing between being a firefighter or an engineer for Google, an investment banker, research scientist in pharma, etc.
If they weren't firefighters, most of these guys would probably try to go NYPD/DSNY (tougher, more stressful jobs) and if they didn't make it there they'd be in some ****ty job selling insurance or the like. lol
