I'll be in the city for a few months. I've looked at sites mapping crime rate by area, etc. but even after visiting the area, I'm still unsure and would prefer the opinion of a local. What are your opinions on the following? With respect to safety (in the latest hours), especially.

-W 96th (Broadway and Amsterdam)
-upper E 80s (b/w York and East End)
-50th and 10th (Hell's Kitchen)

Thanks for the input.

Broadway and Amsterdam without a doubt.

The UWS is awesome.

W. 96th Street. There are some projects over there, but overall it is nice. Hells Kitchen is a dump and E80s are a bore and you'll be stuck on the 4/6 trains which are the worst!

I would think the East 80s are unquestionably the safest. But I think you can find crime stats online.

I'm guessing 50th and 10th would be the most uncertain, since it's so far over.

Personally I think the Upper East Side would be my preference from these choices.

I personally would prefer -W 96th (Broadway and Amsterdam)! Close to transportation of all sorts! Shops, restaurants, bars galore, Central Park..

96th and Amsterdam -- best neighborhood of the three IMO.

W 96th.

West 50s would be dreadful and upper east 80"s dreadfully boring and inconvenient.
