I have started looking in many stores to find curtains and most of what I see are long drapes. Specifically, I'd like 55 inch curtains, but the standard size appears to be 63 inches. The only 55 inch curtains I have seen are sheer, not what I am looking for. Of course, I can have the curtains custom-made, but the estimated cost is over $1500. I can't understand why curtains which are fabric are this expensive. Two years ago, I bought a whole outdoor set of furniture: table, 6 chairs and umbrella from Crate and Barrel and the cost was $2000. Why on earth should curtains cost so much?

If you know of anyplace where I can buy curtains, not drapes, please let me know. Thank you.

What if you buy the 63" curtains and shorten them with iron-on tape? Don't know how well that would work but maybe it's an option. Also, you could check with your local dry cleaner to see how much they would charge to hem curtains for you. Maybe it would be worth it to buy some affordable 63" curtains and just have them hemmed.

The trend these days is to have really long curtains, and to hang the curtain rod quite high towards the ceiling and allow the curtains to go almost all the way to the floor. http://rk.weimgs.com/weimgs/rk/image...-curtain-o.jpg so that is probably why you're seeing so many long ones.

If you are not buying alot of curtains you should check out the homegoods store in Rockville (LI). They also have a great selection. The standard sizes in stores are 84 and 95/96 inches though. You may have to find an inexpensive seamstress to cut and hem the bottom.

Henna: Thank you for your suggestion to use the iron on tape. I may be able to get a friend of mine to help my hem up the 63 inch curtains. And you're definitely right about drapes being a trend. We have baseboard heating in the dining room so I don't really want a drape on top of that. But it is sure interesting how things go in and out of style.

LOVEROFNYC Thanks for your suggestion about the Homegoods Store in Rockville LI.

You can buy curtains at pretty much every major retailer! Another smart place to buy some would be Amazon! I recently got some "black out" curtains and they work great! I found mine here Top 5 Blackout Curtains - Boldlist I got the utopia ones!
