I've never been in Astoria, Queens but I have heard such great things and would like to take the opportunity to explore the area over the course of the weekend.

I'm looking for suggestions on things to potentially do and see, beyond simply eating and shopping. I heard about the Museum of the Moving Images as part of the arts district in the area, but I'm not entirely sure on what else to check out there.

Comments are much appreciated. Thanks!

Gantry State Park is really nice. It's in Long Island City, next to Astoria. Also LIC Flea is having its first weekend of the season this weekend. That should be nearby Gantry. However, that said, I'm not sure the weather will be nice enough to enjoy Gantry.

Also check out Why Leave Astoria?!

edit: sorry, for some reason I thought you were visiting from out of town. My top two suggestions were for LIC, which isn't exactly Astoria. If you already live here, I suggest waiting til there's better weather and then walk around all the shopping areas in Astoria and check out the international food markets, etc. and end up at the Bohemian Beer Garden for a beer and food.

I saw a post on here that said Astoria is the Greek capital of NYC??? And is Petey's a fast-food burger type joint or a more upscale type?

Astoria is known for its restaurants. Just Yelp for whatever cuisine you're in the mood for. Peteys is greasy burgers, can't believe that was mentioned. Gossip Coffee is good. Just walk down 30th ave and Broadway. Those are the two busy streets.

Check out the Noguchi Museum: Home | The Noguchi Museum. It's actually in Long Island City, but it is close to Astoria.

I like this Greek place ETaverna Home . It also happens to be near the place I get my hair cut, and yes, they do speak Greek in my hair salon. The area is up around Ditmars, which is also a nice place to walk around, although it's much quieter than the areas mentioned above (30th Ave and Broadway).

Besides Greek you might also hear Bosnian and Albanian, and you can get those foods there too. Czech is also there, but I believe the Czech population mostly immigrated a long time ago. There is also a Little Egypt area. A lot of Spanish speakers too. Pretty much everything you can think of!
